A dump trailer can turn an otherwise backbreaking and time-consuming job into something much easier to handle. However, a dump trailer that is about to fall apart won’t be nearly as helpful to you. That is why it is so important that you take the time to maintain your dump trailer every once in a while. This is Poplar Bluff Trailer’s guide to dump trailer maintenance.

Before You Begin

Your first and best resource in the owner’s manual. Here you will find guidelines and advice put forward by the manufacturers themselves. Use it to select the correct supplies and direct your maintenance efforts.

The Battery

One advantage dump trailers have over most other trailers is that they come with their own battery, usually stored in the same area as the hydraulics system. This battery will require regular maintenance, up to and including replacement if necessary.

If your trailer’s battery is not being fully charged, it may begin to leak, which will affect your trailer's control center. If your trailer’s bed isn’t lifting as normal, try checking the battery for excess fluid.

The Tires

No vehicle inspection would be complete without a tire check. Use a tire gauge to make sure your dump trailer’s tires are filled to the amount recommended by your owner’s guide. Also be sure to check the tire treads for excessive or uneven wear. Never attempt to use a dump trailer with damaged tires.

The Hydraulic System

Another key feature that sets dump trailers apart from other trailers is the hydraulics used to raise and lower the bed. If your dump trailer’s hoist becomes stuck in the up position, find a square-shaped coil and a round-shaped coil on the pump.  Next, try to loosen each coil’s nuts so that they can be switched. With luck, this will allow you to lower the bed enough to allow a professional to inspect your dump trailer. Remember that this is only a temporary fix. Do not attempt to use the dump trailer until a mechanic has given you the OK.

This guide covers basic dump trailer maintenance. Keep in mind that some repairs are best left to professional mechanics.
